Dog flu outbreak sidelines pooches from La Grange Pet Parade - The Doings Western Springs

action has been a mix of understanding and disappointment to a ban on dogs in the La Grange Pet Parade May 30 due to an outbreak of canine influenza.
"I can see both sides," said La Grange resident Jane Wirengard. "If it's so highly contagious, they're being proactive. If I were a little kid with a dog, I'd be very sad."
Johnna Van Dien, a representative of Great Events, the firm overseeing the 69th annual parade, said dog owners are strongly discouraged from bringing their pets to march in the parade or as spectators lining the route. An organizing committee made the decision to protect dogs' safety May 12.
Instead, dog owners are encouraged to provide a photo of their pets in costume, or bring a stuffed animal wearing the costume to the parade for judges to view.
Organizers also note that water bowls won't be provided along the route to discourage the incidence of the viral respiratory illness spread by close contact among dogs.
The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control reports at least 1,000 cases of canine flu, as well as five fatalities. The flu differs from kennel cough by its

Baby Boomers: Home Is Where The Heart Is | Keeping Current Matters

Within the next five years, Baby Boomers are projected to have the largest household growth of any other generation during that same time period, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard. Let’s take a look at why…
In Merrill Lynch’s latest study“Home in Retirement: More Freedom, New Choices” they surveyed nearly 6,000 adults ages 21 and older about housing.

Crossing the “Freedom Threshold”

Throughout our lives, there are often responsibilities that dictate where we live. Whether being in the best school district for our children, being close to our jobs, or some other factor is preventing a move, the study found that there is a substantial shift that takes place at age 61.
The study refers to this change as “Crossing the Freedom Threshold”. When where you live is no longer determined by responsibilities, but rather

The Doggie that Launched a Million Smiles

Ripley Rose
A Doggie that launched a million smiles. Yep they all do.. That's thier Job!

A lot of tears today  as my wife and I needed to put one of our pups down.  We rescued  Ripley and her partner in crime Charlie from a shelter about  11 years ago.

As all you pet lovers know it’s a hard thing to do..  however as we all know as the tears fade… The great memories and all the smiles and Joy that a pet can bring into your life and home will never fade away.

Ask a Vet: What Kind of Treats Do You Recommend? -Amy Van Tassel, DVM

The first thing I look for in a treat is the number of calories it contains. A couple of years ago, I called some of the major manufacturers of commercial dog and cat treats to find out how many calories were in their treats. I was shocked by some of what I found. One treat had over 1,000 calories! That number of calories is almost the entire daily energy requirement for an average dog weighing 60 pounds.  I have a list of all the information I obtained from these calls on our website at http://woodridgeanimalhospital.com/Main/DogTreatCalories.html for dog treats or http://woodridgeanimalhospital.com/Main/CaloriesinCatTreats.html for cat treats.
